Submariner super clone

The world's most iconic dive watch — cloned to the last detail

About the Submariner

The Rolex Submariner is the watch every collector uses as a reference point — which is exactly why the Submariner clone market is simultaneously the most mature and the most scrutinised. Anything short of correct Cerachrom bezel alignment, genuine lume-plot depth and a working clone movement will be spotted instantly. The best Submariner super clones clear every one of those bars.

Movement is the first dividing line. A genuine Submariner (date, ref. 126610) runs a high-beat automatic movement with Chronergy escapement, 70-hour power reserve and a bidirectional rotor. The clone movement used in top-tier Submariner super clones replicates the going-train architecture, hacks and hand-winds cleanly, and holds a stable beat on a watchmaker's timegrapher. The no-date (ref. 124060) runs a matching clone movement — same quality bar, simpler module. This is where cheap fakes and super clones diverge immediately: a cheap fake uses a generic Chinese automatic and makes up the gap with thicker case walls.

The Cerachrom insert is the second checkpoint. Rolex's black ceramic bezel clicks 120 detents and uses a platinum-filled engraving that holds its finish permanently. A super clone Submariner replicates this in the same single-piece ceramic — the pip position, the dot spacing, the engraving depth, and critically the bezel-to-chapter-ring alignment all matter. A loose or misaligned bezel is the most common tell on a budget fake.

Case finishing on the Submariner is a study in contrasts: the lugs are brushed on the outward face, polished on the inward shoulders, and brushed again on the flanks. The glidelock clasp extends in approximately 2mm increments for around 8mm total adjustment without tools. A proper Submariner clone carries this in correctly finished steel; the link joins should be tight with no perceptible movement. Case proportions are 40mm for the no-date and 41mm for the date — not interchangeable.

The dial is where the hours are logged — and where the most significant variation between super clones appears. Correct lume-plot depth on the hour markers (rectangular plots with bright Super-LumiNova fill), the 300m/1000ft depth rating text in white versus cream across references, and the magnification factor of the cyclops lens (2.5×) all contribute to a convincing result. A good Submariner clone is one you can wear daily, have serviced by any watchmaker, and hand down in five years.

Submariner — common questions

The date variant uses a high-beat automatic clone movement that hacks, hand-winds and mirrors the genuine's going-train architecture. The no-date uses a matching clone movement. Both are meaningfully different from the generic automatics used in cheap fakes.
At a social distance and in photos, a quality Submariner super clone is effectively indistinguishable from the genuine. Under a loupe, minor details diverge — the rotor finishing and the micro-bead on the clasp are the most common tells. It passes casual inspection at every level.
The best Submariner clones use a genuine ceramic insert, not painted aluminium. The engraving is filled with platinum-coloured material and the detent action feels crisp. Alignment to the chapter ring is checked in QC before dispatch.
The Oyster case is sealed with a screw-down crown and pressure-tested caseback — suitable for rain, splashes and brief immersion. We do not recommend subjecting the clone to the 300m depth rating of the genuine Rolex.
